Kaj Franck (1911-1989) was one of Finland's most influential industrial designers and a central figure in modern Finnish design. Best known for his work with Arabia and Nuutajärvi, he helped to define the clean, functional aesthetic associated with post-war Nordic design.
Born in Viipuri, Franck studied at the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and began working for Arabia in the 1940s. His designs avoided unnecessary decoration and focused on practicality, simplicity and versatility. His philosophy was that everyday objects should be beautiful, affordable and easy to use.
Franck became especially famous for the Kilta tableware series, introduced in the 1950s, which later evolved into the enduring Teema line now produced by Iittala. He also designed glassware and enamelware, often using modular forms and muted colours that could be freely mixed.
Beyond his design work, Franck was an influential teacher and artistic director who shaped generations of Finnish designers. Today, he is regarded as a key pioneer of democratic design and many of his works remain in production.
