Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) and Aino Aalto (1894-1949) were pioneering figures in modern Finnish architecture and design. Together, they helped to shape Nordic modernism through architecture, furniture, glassware and everyday household objects.
The couple met while studying architecture in Helsinki and married in 1924. They collaborated professionally and their work combined modernist principles with natural materials, organic forms and a strong focus on human comfort and daily life.
They co-founded Artek in 1935 to promote modern furniture and design. Alvar became internationally famous for his architecture, including public buildings, libraries, churches and private homes characterised by flowing forms, light-filled spaces and extensive use of wood. He also designed iconic furniture such as bentwood stools and chairs, along with the famous Savoy Vase for Iittala.
Aino Aalto played a major role in both architecture and interior design and was also an influential designer in her own right. Her pressed-glass Bölgeblick glassware, later known simply as the Aino Aalto series, became a classic of functional Nordic design.
The Aaltos helped to establish Finland's international reputation in modern design and their works remain highly influential today.
